How To Improve Our Health As We Get Older.

As most of you know I am a huge advocate for healthy living, especially in the over 50 age group. I really do not believe that reaching the age of fifty means that we should put on our slippers and spend our evenings in front of the TV. Life is for living and there is no reason why anyone cannot have a full, active and healthy life. In fact I know many people over the age of fifty who live a more active life than some twenty year old’s. It is all about attitude and the determination to make your life the best you can and improving your health.



Of course it is not that simple ! As we age, our bodies age and change, sometimes giving us challenges that we never had to deal with before. For me, I am VERY aware that my body is not as ‘young’ as it used to be. I ache a lot more, particularly after sitting and find my joints are ‘creaky’. As I used to do gymnastics, dance and tennis as a youngster, it really was a shock to me to find I was not as supple as I used to be. It was actually quite disheartening to discover these ailments creeping into my life, especially as I still felt twenty one in my head !



At the age of 55 I still enjoy playing tennis.

So, what do we do to overcome these signs of ageing ?

Move and keep moving ! Nothing helps your body more than to be as active as you can be. Exercise in any form is crucial to your overall health, physical and mental. Just thirty minutes a day of exercise can greatly improve your health within a short space of time. This exercise can be something as simple as walking the dog or a yoga class. Never underestimate the power of exercise. It can be life changing and you will never look back once you have started. Joining a gym is a great way to improve your health and to make new friends. I LOVE my gym as I have a focus for my health, but I also like the social side of it and I have made like minded friends. All this is not only good for your physical health, but also your mental health which can also be a challenge as we get older. Positive mental attitude is very important especially as we get older and are faced with uncertainties and difficulties in our life. How many of you can remember what it was like to be eighteen without a care in the world ? Wasn’t it wonderful not to have the worries of ‘grown up’ life, money worries, health worries and family worries ? Keeping positive has certainly helped me during difficult times in my life. It isn’t easy I know, when you are going through a difficult time, but I always try to ride the storm and believe that better things are just round the corner. There are many great books on the market that give great advice on how to improve your positivity and I have read quite a few that have been inspirational.



Looking after your friendships is crucial to all age groups but particularly to the over 50’s who may have retired early and find themselves missing the social side of the workplace. Keeping in contact with friends and making an effort to spend time with them will help you feel more positive in your life.



Exploring your creativity will give you a new focus in your life and you may even gain new friends who are like minded. Work out your interests and look around for local groups that you could join. Perhaps you are interested in flower arranging, art, writing or dressmaking ? There is always some local group that could help you nurture your inner creativity.



Enjoying nature and the natural world around us can be so uplifting and so good for the soul. Try walking in the countryside taking in the wonderful world in which we live. Even better, join a walking group and make new friends as an added bonus. I practise mindfulness which is the process of living in the moment and enjoying our surroundings, rather than worrying about the past or future. Been mindful while walking in the countryside is just so relaxing and well worth trying.



Diet is another important factor in our quest to handle the ageing process. If we fuel our bodies with good, healthy food, then our body will be able to cope more with the effects of ageing. Eating plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit and other healthy foods is especially essential as we get older. Of course having little treats is also important as it gives us pleasure. I mean, who doesn’t like a take away or a cream bun every now and then ? I know I do ! It is just important to keep this in moderation, rather than making it the main part of your diet.



Sometimes our diet doesn’t give us everything we need even though we make the effort to ensure we are eating the right foods. This is especially true for the over 50’s. As our bodies age our needs change too and sometimes a change in diet is not enough. I have a very good, healthy diet ( apart from the odd fondant fancy from Betty’s ) but I still suffer with joint pain.

Women particularly can have serious bone issues following the onset of the menopause. I am convinced the menopause is responsible for my aching joints as I was fine before that. Many women find that they need to take calcium supplements as issues with brittle bones can be a real problem and can be life changing. In fact, according to NHS research, women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the five to seven years after menopause. While you can’t halt bone loss, you can improve it by eating food groups with high calcium content.     love that you can get vitamins as liquid! I am so bad at taking tablets especially big ones like vitamins! They make me gag so I just avoid taking vitamins all together! I’ll look out for this in boots.
