Can Aromatherapy Help Stress ?
I have suffered stress at numerous times of my life as I am sure you have too. It can affect us in so many ways, especially our health. We all have different ways of coping with it. I like to go out for a walk with my dog George, taking in lots of fresh air and enjoying the countryside close to where we live. I also enjoy long hot baths with aromatherapy oils, followed by a relaxing half hour laid on my bed. I like then to listen to a meditation or one of my favourite self hypnosis recordings.
As a trained aromatherapist I understand the wonderful qualities that aromatherapy oils possess. In my previous aromatherapy practice I saw so many clients who were dealing with stress. It was shocking how much it was having a negative impact on their health. So I thought I would write a few posts on my blog about how aromatherapy can help you with various issues. First of all let’s chat about stress.
Stress is just awful isn’t it ? It saps our energy, it steals our sleep, it upsets our digestive system and it weakens our immune system and that’s just for starters ! Stress can actually trigger other health issues such as migraines, skin conditions and not forgetting depression and anxiety. So I will chat about the main essential oils that I keep in my bathroom cabinet for stress and anxious times in my life.
Tea Tree Oil is one of the best essential oils to boost the immune system which can get seriously depleted when we are under extreme stress. Tea Tree Oil is one of the best oils you can have in your bathroom cabinet as it is anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial, so it’s an excellent all rounder. Most people don’t like the smell as it can smell a little antiseptic but try and get over that if you can. It’s such a super oil and so versatile. I pop 6-10 drops in my bath for a immune system booster once a week and more if I am feeling unwell.
Lavender essential oil is one of the most versatile oils around and is a must buy oil. Like Tea Tree Oil, it is a good all rounder. The healing properties of this wonderful oil include, a natural analgesic ( painkiller ), antidepressant, antiseptic, anti-bacterial, sedative and balancing of the nervous system. Lavender is so good for helping relieve stress and is especially good if you are feeling anxious and tense. Once again I use Lavender in my bath, just 6-10 drops is enough for you to feel the benefit from this lovely calming oil.
When I am feeling particularly tense, I just sniff the Lavender oil direct from the bottle. Or you can pop a few drops on a handkerchief and sniff it if you are out and about. A little tip of mine is to pop the oil on your handkerchief and then pop the handkerchief in a plastic sandwich bag which will retain the oil and its fragrance until you need it. I use this method frequently as it is excellent for panic attacks and doesn’t look too odd if you are sniffing into a handkerchief.
My last recommendation for an essential oil that will help relieve stress is Rose. Rose essential oil is my absolute favourite oil, although it is also one of the most expensive ! Rose is a wonderful oil which benefits ladies because of its excellent way that it balances out hormone levels.
This is good for ladies of all ages but especially for those of us at a certain age who are going through the menopause. I just think the gorgeous fragrance of Rose is so uplifting and a great mood enhancer and so its also a big favourite for relieving stress. If Rose is a little expensive for you then try Geranium as this has similar qualities to Rose and also smells so good.
For me I think it’s important to try and treat stress in a holistic way rather than resorting to medication, as stress can be in and out of our lives constantly and it is better to treat it naturally. I have taken Valium in the past to try and help me but it only masks the issue and isn’t a long term solution for me. Obviously we are all different and I would advise anyone undergoing serious stress to have a chat with your GP first.
There are lots of other ways you can help reduce your stress levels such as relaxation, meditation, self hypnosis, yoga, joining new social clubs, exercise and healthy eating. It’s a matter of finding a way that suits you and that you are comfortable with.
Aromatherapy is an amazing stress reliever and can be used by most people regardless of age, gender or level of fitness and is worth a try. Even just the simple method of popping some essential oils in a spray bottle with some water and spraying it round your room can help induce relaxation.
You really don’t have to be an expert aromatherapist to use the simple oils as detailed above. Obviously please check with you GP or pharmacist before using the oils if you are unsure, especially if you are on medication.
Please leave me a comment if you use aromatherapy in your life to help reduce stress. What are your favourite oils ? Are you scared to use oils and not sure where to start ? I will reply to all your comments. If you need any help choosing and using essential oils then please just message me and I will be only too glad to help.
In the meantime, I hope you are finding ways to help with stress and I would love to know how you deal with stress yourself.
Until next time my friends.
