Are Fitness Classes The Best Way To Get Fit?

8th December 2018

So you want to get fit and you spend plenty of time thinking about it, but not quite doing it ? Does the idea of getting fit fill you with dread and anxiety, along with a distinct lack of self confidence? Most of us have felt like this at some point in our life. We don’t know where to start and we find excuses to avoid starting. This does not help our confidence. I think much of the problem is that we feel isolated and alone in our quest to get fit. We may be the only one in the family who feels a need to get fit. This immediately isolates us as we don’t have a like minded person who we can rely on for support. It’s a proven fact that you are more likely to stick to a fitness routine if you have someone who will encourage you on your way.

For this reason, I am writing this blog post on the advantages of joining a fitness class. I personally attend at least four fitness classes a week at the David Lloyd Club in Harrogate and I love every minute of them. The classes I attend can vary in intensity, but all of them make me feel I have had a good workout. My classes include Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Aerobics, Simply Stretch and Barre Class. As you can see, some classes are low impact and some are high impact. By varying the level of intensity I feel this gives me a better overall workout which suits me and my needs.

So why do I feel that fitness classes are ideal for you if you are struggling to return or start some form of fitness? Firstly I feel that there is safety in numbers. As dramatic as that sounds, it really does have a positive benefit to someone who is starting on their fitness journey alone. We feel less isolated if we are in a group of like minded people. Yes, there will be someone in the group who has been attending the class for many months. Likewise there will be others who are beginners, just like you. To be honest, from my own experience at the David Lloyd Club I have always found everyone in a class to be friendly and helpful, no matter what their level of experience. Support while getting fit is crucial and vital to sealing your own commitment to the fitness regime. If we are encouraged by others then we are more likely to stick to the fitness plan.

Secondly I really enjoy making new friends within the fitness classes. You will always find yourself talking to others in the class. I have made some valuable friendships in my time at the David Lloyd Club and it is usually through the fitness classes. The great thing about being a member of a club such as David Lloyd is that you really do feel part of the community. It is a club of like minded people who are all about getting fit and socialising too. We often have a fear of joining a club that more experienced members will be stand offish and aloof but this is just not true. I have found all members, regardless of age and experience, to be helpful, friendly and encouraging. This community feel really comes to life during a fitness class, where this strong, like minded feeling comes into its own.

Finally I love the variety of the fitness classes that you can join. Personally I think variety in a fitness regime is important if you want to stick to it. Boredom is one of the leading reasons why people drop out of a fitness plan. With the huge variety of fitness classes available at the David Lloyd Club, there is NO chance you would ever get bored. There are approximately fifty different classes to choose from at my Club in Harrogate. That’s almost ONE for every week of the year and each one is often on at various times of the week. How could you ever get bored with that amazing selection? I always find the problem is choosing too many classes and not having the time to fit them in ! That’s a nice problem to have.

Don’t forget all the classes at the David Lloyd Clubs are run by expert instructors in their field who will help you get the most from the class. Booking classes at the David Lloyd Club is so easy and can be done through calling the club, online or through an App (which is my favourite way of booking.) Classes are available from early morning until the evening, so there really is no excuse for not attending a class to fit in with your work or life schedule.

I have written a few posts on my time at the David Lloyd Club in Harrogate and if you would like to read a post that gives you an overall view of the Club then please click here

There are sometimes offers on at the Club which will give you the chance to try out the fabulous facilities for yourself. This is a great way to try the classes but I promise you, you will be amazed at the facilities and the trial period will go so quickly. The lovely staff at all the David Lloyd Clubs will be only too willing to chat to you about your needs and your worries. This is especially beneficial if you are a first time gym goer. I will leave the link below for the Harrogate Club so you can have a read of everything they offer.

Have you found any benefit to attending fitness classes? Do you find it more motivating to attend a class rather than try go to the gym on your own? Please let me know in the comments below.

Until next time dear friends

Much love
