I first saw Birchbox beauty products while browsing the internet one Sunday afternoon. And seeing I’m a sucker for trying new beauty goodies I thought I would investigate further.
Birchbox was created in 2010 by two friends who had a vision of creating a box of varied beauty products which allowed women to try different brands they would not otherwise come across. The success of Birchbox was quickly followed by the launch of Birchbox for Men in 2012.
So what is Birchbox ? It is basically a monthly subscription service where you receive a box of five luxury beauty products from new and well known brands. The products range from make up to hair products, some in ‘try me’ sizes and some normal full size. The cost of the subscription each month is £10 plus £2.95 P & P and you can unsubscribe at any time.
In July this year I therefore decided to try the service for a couple of months. They seem to have a joining offer on every month and when I joined I actually received two boxes ( June and July’s box ) for the price of one which was amazing value.
The boxes arrived very quickly via Hermes and were packaged securely in a strong outer box.
The June beauty products arrived in a strong decorative box which was pink with pineapples on it ! Very cute. It had a sliding drawer which then revealed the products inside.
I have to say I got a little excited looking at all the cute products inside the box. Did I say I LOVE cute things ?
So in the June Birchbox I received Benefit Dream Screen Matte Sunscreen for the Face 6ml, Pure & Light Organic Skincare Essential Face Cream 15ml, Percy & Reed Hairspray 50ml, Amika Nourishing Hair Mask 20ml, Jelly Pong Pong Lip / Cheek Cream 4g.
All these items together were definitely worth above the £10 purchase price of the box.
I LOVED all of the items in this box. All are small enough to take on holiday or to pop in a bag.
I especially loved the Jelly Pong Pong lip and cheek tint which was so handy to keep in my bag for those times I need an extra pop of colour when out and about. As its a cream and not a powder it was better for my skin. Now I have more lines on my face ( yuk, I know but that’s the problem with my age ) I find that cream is better on my skin than powder which can settle in my lines and its SO ageing. This pot is full size and the RRP is £17.95 so to get the pot in my box was such a bargain. Plus a little goes a long way so I can see this pot lasting for at least six months and maybe more.
So onto the July Birchbox which was designed in collaboration with Millie Mackintosh. The box was a beautiful hard wearing box in gorgeous lilacs and purple colours with the products nestled in a fabric drawstring bag.
The products in the July Birchbox included Loc Ultra Gloss Lip Pencil Full Size ( designed by Millie Mackintosh), John Frieda Frizz Ease Primer Full Size, Nails Inc nail varnish 4ml, Spectrum Make Up Brush Full Size, Siskyn Brightening Night Oil 10ml.
Once again the value of the products far exceeded the cost of the £10 box and in my opinion were great value for money.
My favourite product was the Siskyn Brightening Night Oil which contains lots of natural oils and essential oils and is 100% natural. I have tried this for the last week and the results are fabulous. It really does brighten my skin and the grey appearance that my skin seems to have acquired since the menopause has diminished. This is definately a keeper for me and I will be buying this again in the full size.
A little extra mention for the Loc Lip Pencil which I also adored. I received it in Bohemian Rose which is a lovely deep pink colour, perfect for my skin tone. As its a pencil its easy to apply and its so creamy and hydrating.
So, overall what did I think to the Birchbox experience ? Well I loved it. I thought it was excellent value for money and I enjoyed the excitement of opening the box to see what beauty goodies were in.
I think, as we get older we become stagnant in our dress and beauty routines. At least I certainly do ! I stick to the same old lipstick, same face cream, same classic jumper etc etc. You get the idea ? It’s nice to break out of the mould and try something different and Birchbox offers that. Most of the products I received I have never heard of and probably wouldn’t have tried. Plus you can cancel at any time so its worth trying for a couple of months. Or perhaps send a Birchbox as a gift ? The boxes are suitable for any age and I think would be gratefully received by anyone. There was just something rather exciting about opening the cute boxes to see what was in there. It sounds like I have a rather sad life but sometimes we just need a little pick me up for those times we are feeling a bit low. Any excuse I hear you say !
If you have any questions please leave me a comment below. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Birchboxes. Maybe you have tried them before ? Or sent one as a gift ? What do you think to the concept ? Good or bad ?
Thanks so much for reading today.
Lots of love
