Blogging Is Cool For The Over 50’s

Someone asked me recently if blogging was appropriate for the over 50’s. Through gritted teeth I politely informed them that I am over 50. And yes, I did think it was ‘appropriate’ for us oldies ! The internet is full of bloggers, writing about all sorts of topics from beauty to parenting and from fashion to food. Yes, most of these bloggers are between the ages of 15 – 40 with huge followings of a similar age.

So where do I fit in ? Is there room for me among the Zoellas of this world ? Honestly ? Yes, there absolutely is a need for ‘older’ writers to be blogging. After all, how can these younger bloggers address topics such as menopause and empty nest syndrome with any degree of accuracy.

But do the general public want to read about the symptoms of menopause and how many times you cried when your youngest daughter left home for university. Well, surprise surprise, yes they do ! Did you know that there are over 22 million over 50’s living in the UK  and that about 75% of them love the internet, technology and social media. 70% of this age group actually have a Facebook account ! How amazing is that ? Facebook is known as a great way to contact old school friends and family and is not age restricted.

And yet many over 50’s feel that brands ignore the fact that they are techy savvy and able to place an internet order with the same ease as a seventeen year old.  These brands forget that the over 50’s are usually child free and have a high disposable income with more expensive tastes especially in the fashion and travel sectors. From my own experience I was quite happy to stay in budget hotels as a young mother. Now in my 50’s I only seek out higher rated hotels. My tastes and my income have been set to a higher limit.

And that brings us back to blogging. The over 50’s are so up to date with the internet that they appreciate the vast amount of content available to read on the Web. From reading the daily paper to reading celebrity columns, the ‘older’ generation love to accumulate as much information as they can on their laptop, tablet or smart phone. I even have a You Tube Channel ( A Yorkshire Girl ) ! I am enjoying making videos, editing and publishing my work. I am certain though that Steven Spielberg does not need to worry !

Blogging is just another way for this baby boomer generation to learn more about a variety of topics. Menopause, health, recipes, fashion, travel are all topics that the older generation crave to read about. Gone are the days of popping into the local library to read up on hot flushes or find a good recipe for Christmas Cake. Blogging brings all these topics to the reader in an instant. More importantly, the reader can interact with the blogger. It makes the whole procedure fun and ‘real’.

blogging

During my time blogging on this site I have received so many lovely messages saying how much they enjoyed the topics I had chosen to write about. It not only gives people information, but also hope and clarity, especially about something they may be concerned about. After publishing my blog post on anxiety I received so many emails thanking me for writing about such a difficult topic. I hope that my blog posts will encourage the reader to talk about subjects that previously have been difficult to talk about.

There is a great need for us all to speak out about what concerns us and this is not dictated by our age. It is time that we speak out and learn from each other. As I have learnt so much from the ‘younger’ bloggers, I hope that they in turn take the time to read blog posts by ‘ older’ writers with their experience and wisdom.

I love writing and I love blogging. I love the freedom that blogging gives me. I love that my thoughts and my words can be presented online for all to see. I love that people can respond to my blogging, especially with encouragement and confidence. Blogging brings together so many people in so many ways, regardless of age.

It is amazing that we have this tool at our fingertips and everyone should be encouraged to use it. Blogging is amazing, fulfilling and brings out talents in us that most of us never knew existed. I am astounded that I managed to set up this blog myself with my limited technical experience. Another new skill learned for this 53 year old !

What do you think of blogging for the ‘older’ generation ? Have you thought about starting a blog of your own ? What would you write about in your blog ? Are there any topics you would like to see me write about in the future ?

If you have any questions about blogging then I would love to hear from you in the comments below. Also do you want to start your own blog but don’t know where to start ? Then please drop me an email and I will help you all I can.

Great post! As you’ve mentioned Susanna there are ’22 million over 50’s living in the UK’. I love it when I come across bloggers within my age group and can be empowered, uplifted or inspired by their posts which are relevant to me at this stage of my life (i.e. dealing with menopause, changing body shape, reinvention, personal styling etc).

Thanks Valerie. I so agree. There are so many over 50’s who love using the internet for shopping, social media and knowledge gathering. And yet, they seem to be overlooked so often by brands and individuals as ‘too old’to be using the internet. I love so many bloggers of all ages and feel we can learn so much from each other. But let us keep the flag flying for us over 50’s ! Yay xxx

Thank you Sal. I read an article recently that said the over 50’s were the ‘forgotten’ generation ! and yet all my friends are SO active and really making a great contribution to the world. Those youngsters could learn a lot from us I think ! And yes ! You must start a blog. I love it. Let me know your blog name and I will pop across and have a read xxx
