We often hear the word ‘personal trainer’ in the media and in daily life. Quite often we associate personal trainers with the rich and famous as they attempt to reach that ‘perfect body’ ready for the red carpet events. I have personally used a personal trainer and I am neither rich nor famous, but I found the experience very beneficial to my fitness plan.
To explain further what a personal trainer is, I thought I would devote a blog post to a chat I had with a personal trainer who works at my gym, the David Lloyd Club in Harrogate. I spoke to Jack Wood who has been a personal trainer since 2014.
Why did you become a personal trainer?
I became a personal trainer as it was an integral part of my own fitness journey. I was overweight at the time and fitness played a big part in my transformation. I wanted to help other people achieve their fitness goals and because I had been in their position, I felt I really understood their needs and concerns. Becoming a personal trainer gave me the chance to do this and improve people’s lives for the positive.
What kind of training have you had?
Training is intensive and always ongoing. There are always new courses for us to attend and the David Lloyd Club encourages us to learn new skills. Recently I have trained in Broga (an extended, high energy form of Yoga) and Indoor Cycling which have been a great addition to my list of skills. I also learn a lot from my fellow personal trainers who I work with. We all have different skills and specialities and it is really helpful to share these skills.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Every day is different which means I never get bored. I see different people with different needs and each one deserves the best help I can give. It is such a satisfying job as I help people push to their fitness goals. It really is an amazing feeling for me and for them when you see them achieve their target. I always leave work with a real sense of job satisfaction and a job well done.
What would you say to anyone reading this who is new to the gym? Especially the older potential gym user?
Don’t be scared! Everyone is there for the same reason, to improve fitness and achieve optimum health. Think of the benefits to your body and life. Please don’t be put off because you are older or maybe unfit. Everyone started at the bottom and you can only improve. I find that there are many older people in the gym who are an inspiration to the younger generation. Don’t forget there are many older people who are a lot fitter than people half their age. Age is not a barrier to using the gym.
So, how do you deal with a new arrival to the gym who may be nervous and apprehensive?
As a personal trainer we have to be approachable and friendly. I am always aware if someone is nervous and my job is to make them feel more comfortable in the gym environment. My first job is to listen to them and their needs and be encouraging about what they can achieve. I walk round the gym with them, not just to show them the equipment, but also to let them see that the gym is not such a scary place and the gym users are a friendly bunch of people.
What does a gym induction consist of?
Here at the David Lloyd Club we offer an induction of 4 x half hour personal training sessions which will give the person a good grounding in the use of the gym and their own personal goals. During this induction we find out your goals, any injuries / disabilities we need to be aware of and a general insight into you as a person. We can then tailor your fitness programme to you and your needs, making sure that you never feel out of your depth but also encouraging you to reach your goals. We encourage you to use the same personal trainer as this promotes continuity which is more beneficial for you.
Do you think it is beneficial for people to use a personal trainer?
Absolutely! It is great if you struggle with motivation which is a common issue for someone starting a new gym. We are there to gently encourage you on your fitness journey. It is great to have a familiar face at the gym, someone you can ask for advice if you need help outside your personal training sessions.
What equipment would you recommend for newbies to the gym?
Firstly we have a great machine here at the David Lloyd Club called Boditrax. This is a simple machine to use (you merely stand on it) which records 14 different body stats in a matter of seconds. Stats include body fat, BMI, muscle mass and your ideal weight. This is a great way to see progress and to see what you may need to work on more. I also recommend a mixture of cardio and resistance machines as this will give you a good basic level of fitness. Many people are scared of using weights, but it is not all about body building. Exercise using weights is great for building up bone and joint strength, which is essential as you get older.
Do you think exercise makes a difference to people’s lives?
Definitely! Fitness is crucial to our physical and mental health. Our bodies work better when they are at their optimum level and we suffer from less aches and pains, especially as we get older. The stronger we are then the less we are prone to injuries and general health problems. Exercise is proven to have a beneficial effect on our mental health and is a great way to relieve stress and other mental health issues. I also think if we see improvements to our health, we generally feel happier and more positive about our life. The gym, especially here at the David Lloyd Club has a great sense of community and we have many social events. It is easy to make friends in a club like this as we have so many activities going on. Our club is so friendly that many members say they enjoy the social side of meeting people just as much as the fitness. That obviously makes it easier to visit the gym and is a great incentive to keep coming back.
